A customer in Agra opens ChatGPT and types “which is the best place for a family dinner near Sanjay Place”. She gets three names and a short reason for each. She never sees a list of ten blue links, and she never scrolls. If your restaurant is not one of those three names, you were not in the race.

That is the shift behind AI search optimization for business. More people now ask questions to AI assistants and read Google’s AI Overviews at the top of search results. These tools still lean heavily on the web, but they summarise it, and they choose a few brands to mention. The work is to make your business easy to find, easy to understand and easy to trust for those tools.

How AI tools decide which businesses to mention

AI assistants do not have a secret list of favourite brands. They pull from what is written about you across the web, including your own website, your Google Business Profile, review sites, news mentions, directories and social media.

Three things tend to matter most. Consistency, meaning the same name, address, phone number and description everywhere. Clarity, meaning your website says plainly what you sell, where, and for whom. Reputation, meaning real reviews and mentions on other trusted sites that agree with what you say about yourself.

If any of these is weak, the AI has less reason to pick you over a competitor whose information is cleaner.

Write your website for questions, not slogans

A homepage that says “Excellence in Every Bite” tells an AI tool nothing. A homepage that says “Family restaurant in Aligarh serving North Indian and Chinese food, open 11 am to 11 pm, with parking and home delivery within 5 km” answers five questions at once.

Add a proper FAQ section with the questions customers actually ask on the phone. Write a clear About page that states when you started, who runs the business and what you are known for. Use simple headings. Plain, specific writing is what both people and AI systems find easiest to quote.

Google AI Overviews still start with Google

For searches in India, the summary at the top of many Google results is built from pages and listings Google already trusts. That makes your normal SEO and your Google Business Profile the foundation of AI visibility, not a separate project.

Keep your listing complete, keep reviews coming in, and keep publishing useful blog posts that answer real questions in your field. A dentist who writes clearly about “how much does a root canal cost in Mathura” has a fair chance of being quoted for that question.

ChatGPT search for local business needs reviews and mentions

AI assistants like to repeat what many sources agree on. A café with hundreds of recent reviews that mention “best cold coffee” will be associated with cold coffee. A café with nine reviews will not be associated with anything.

Encourage reviews that describe specifics, like the dish, the service or the occasion. Get listed on the main directories for your industry. Look for genuine local press or blog mentions, such as a food blogger visit or a feature in the city paper’s online edition. Each consistent mention adds to the picture.

Keep your details identical everywhere

Search your business name and check every listing you can find, including Google, Justdial, IndiaMART, Zomato, Practo, Facebook, Instagram and your website. Fix old phone numbers, old addresses and old names. Mixed information is the fastest way to get left out of AI answers, because the tool cannot be sure which version is true.

Measure what you can

There is no single dashboard for AI visibility yet. A simple monthly habit works. Ask ChatGPT, Gemini and Google the five questions your customers would ask, note whether you are mentioned, and track it over time. Watch your Google Search Console for growth in longer, question-style searches, which often signals that your content is being read for answers.

Generative engine optimization is still young, and anyone who promises guaranteed AI rankings is guessing. The basics above are what we can control, and they help normal search at the same time.
